The Origin Of The Cheeseburger

Updated: Jul 12

Slapping a piece of cheese to a burger has always been easy and Reader's Digest recently released that the Cheeseburger is one of America’s favorite meals. With that being said, what does the future of the cheeseburger look like? What else will revolutionize the burger? Before we get there though, let’s delve a bit into the history of the cheeseburger.

With Summer right on our doorsteps, we’ll be firing up the grill and will be making some burgers, but have you ever wondered where the cheeseburger came from? As many people know, the hamburger is an American food staple and dates back to the 1800’s but unlike its precursor, the cheeseburger has a much easier to find origin. The cheeseburger originated in 1924 in Pasadena, California when a young man named Lionel Sternberger, at the age of 16 added a slice of American cheese on top of a cooking hamburger in his father’s sandwich shop. And the rest as they say, was history, and we’re going to bite into that a little bit more! The use of the word cheeseburger has a bit of a contested history as there are many claims for the original cheeseburger. In the case of Lionel Sternberger, they called it a hamburger with cheese and missed out on being the first to give it its iconic name.

One of early appearances of the word cheeseburger on a menu is often linked to O’dells in Los Angeles, 1928, where they offered a “Cheeseburger smothered with chili”. On the other hand in Louisville, Kentucky we have a claim for inventing the cheeseburger from their menu in 1934. Another claim to fame is from 1935 where we found a trademark for the word “cheeseburger” being registered and approved by Humpty-Dumpty Drive-In Denver, Colorado.
